Objectives and target

Objectives

– Inquire into best suitable satellite remote sensing missions delivering air pollutant observations as open-data to support farming-related PM monitoring and analysis in the Lombardy Region.

– Design and calibrate pilot PM predictive models to assess the feasibility of integrating satellite-based estimates with fixed ground-sensors observations to improve spatial coverages and accuracy of operational PM monitoring at a regional and sub-regional scale.

– Develop accurate local models for source apportionment and long-term exposure to farming-related PM by coupling high-detailed PM observations from on-site sampling and satellite-based estimates.

-Establish connections with local stakeholders to articulate both scientific debate and awareness on farming-related PM emissions.

According to the objectives, expected outcomes fall into two interconnected domains which are respectively the scientific and the society/policy‐making domains. To that end, the project will not only take care of disseminating research outcomes towards stakeholders and citizens but will leverage on the interactions between researchers and civil society along all the project lifetime in order to achieve a broader effect and to extend its impact.

Target

Given the nature of the project and its objectives, the main target groups of the communication have been identified:

  • Scientific stakeholders (universities and research centers)
  • Business companies related to intensive farming and industrial agriculture
  • Regional authorities (decision makers, politicians, monitoring services operators) involved in environmental regulation
  • Agricultural college students
  • Media (journalists, bloggers, influencers)
  • Civil society (citizen associations, general public)
